The officers of the Science Fiction Poetry Association offer an award to recognize the best speculative poem of 1-10 lines published in the previous year.
Although hundreds of excellent very short science fiction, fantasy, and horror poems are regularly published each year, they seem to be mostly overlooked in the Rhysling Award process. In the history of the Rhysling Award, few poems of 10 lines or fewer have been nominated, and none have won. Yet, there seems to be a surge of interest in short forms. It is not uncommon to find excellent scifaiku, tanka, cinquains, and other short poems in speculative poetry journals. The Dwarf Stars Award acknowledges excellence in this specialized field.
Unlike the annual Rhysling Anthology, Dwarf Stars is an edited anthology.
Poets are encouraged to submit poems published in the previous year for consideration.
Poets, poetry readers, and editors are also encouraged to send suggestions of eligible poems to the current Dwarf Stars editor. Approximately 30 poems are included in each Dwarf Stars anthology.
The Dwarf Stars Award process occurs in the fall, so as not
to interfere with established Rhysling Award procedures. The anthology is
published chapbook style. SFPA members vote on their favorite short-short poem
from the anthology, and the winner is given the Dwarf Stars Award.
The ballot deadline for the 2007 Dwarf Stars Award is December 15, 2007,
and the winner is announced on December 30.
Deborah P Kolodji was named the first Dwarf Stars editor by former SFPA president Mike Allen.
